Glass bangles are mostly produced in only one Indian city called Firozabad in North India. Bangles that were made from plastic started replacing the glass bangles. Glass bangles are usually smooth, with some texture or set with stones. However, in many cultures, especially in the Arabian Peninsula and in South Asia, bangles have evolved into various types in which different ones are used at different occasions. In India, Hyderabad has a historic market for bangles named the Laad Bazaar. In Pakistan, glass bangles are almost all produced in Hyderabad, Pakistan. Glass bangles are found in many colors. First of all a note about the hardness and therefore relative durability of gemstones. To measure hardness, the jewellery industry uses the Mohs scale. This gem-trade standard, conceived by Friedrich Mohs in 1812, measures the ability of a gem or mineral to resist abrasion damage. Diamond at 10 is the hardest whereas talc at 1 is the softest. Popular gemstones like amethyst and citrine register 7 whereas rubies and sapphires register 9. Most of us come off the beach on the first day with the 3 s’s all achieved - rings caked in sand, sea-salt and suntan lotion. Nude sunbathing, as far as silver and gold jewellery is concerned, is a must! Remember also that sand will scratch the surface of precious metals. An engagement ceremony would be celebrated with an established rite after families reached a marriage agreement for their children. During the ceremony engagement rings would be exchanged between boy and girl. The Romans used an ancient clasped hand design for betrothal rings. Some antique engagement rings were made with a delicate designs using turquoise. And which is symbolized the forget-me-not flower. This "fede" or "trust" ring remained popular for centuries and is still used in jewellery. Gemstones in antique engagement rings were expensive luxuries as trade with the Middle East and Asia had not yet allowed for the flow of imported stones. In accordance to an Egyptian belief the engagement ring would be placed on the left ring-finger. They believe that very fine vein ran directly to the heart from the left finger. |
