Often you will see Indian women wearing huge armfuls of glass bangles, even while doing day-to-day chores. It is said that bangles bring safety and luck to ones husband. The color is the greatest difference in the metals. The elements which include over one hundred known minerals are a diverse class when taken as a whole. The non metals are extremely diverse. Due to the diversity of the non metals subclass there is most of this diversity. The non-metals include some elements known as semi-metals who share some properties with metals but differ in other characteristics. A few gems are oxides and only one gem, diamond, is composed of a single element, carbon. Often, new names will be created for ordinary sounding minerals which sound prettier or more valuable, such as Moldavite for the green variety of tektites. It could not be "precious" if it were common! This means that the metal must be malleable, that it can be bent, hammered, or otherwise shaped. Two other characteristics are also important. There are also many gemstones that are not true minerals, but which are gemstone varieties of recognized minerals. |
